| The social club is a John Paul II
High School community organization. It is not a club for students only. The
activities are meant to appeal to and include participation by students, parents and staff
members. Some activities separate students and adults, while other activities
combine students and adults. The primary goal of the Social
Club is to provide a healthy, fun environment for teenage students to interact with each
other and also with their parents, teachers and other adults. The focus of many JPII
HS organizations follows our motto of Seek to Serve. The
Social Club does participate in some service activities, but it is not primarily a service organization. It is meant to be a club where young
teenagers learn important social skills and adults enjoy each other's company in a variety
of interesting social activities. Studying is great, being conscious of the needs of
others is also great and our community at every age level believes in service. Being
service oriented does not imply that students and adults cannot have fun as well.
The Social Club is fundamentally a club for everybody to have a good time.

Primary
Social Club Activities
Social Club students and adults may at any time select
to organize an appropriate activity for its members, but there are two primary activities
that are the focus of the club's existence, which are indoor ballroom dancing and outdoor climbing.
The ballroom dancing, which students and adults learn and do at
parties and outings is social dancing or ballroom dancing. It is a style of dancing
where a couple holds each other. The variety with this type of dancing is quite
amazing and for many decades there have been competitions with this style of
dancing. Ballroom dancing includes Foxtrot, Waltz, Swing, Cha-Cha, Rumba, Tango,
Merengue, Mambo and Polka. . It is dancing with the stars without the competition and the stars.
Mr. Schram has taught this type of dancing to students for more than 30 years and everywhere students really enjoy dancing this style when people at any age learn
how much fun it can be. Being a great dancer is nice, but being comfortable in a
fun, social, dancing environment is the real goal. It is common to hear teenagers say that they do not like "boring adult dancing," and always such statements are made by teenagers who have never tried ballroom dancing.
Outdoors the pace changes considerably as students and
adults learn rock climbing, rappelling and ziplining. Mr. Schram has a 45-foot rock
climbing tower on his land, which allows climbing from the simplest level to the most
expert climbs. There is also rappelling for beginners, intermediates and advanced
helicopter-style rappelling. Fun for everybody is the 250-foot zipline which
requires no skill at all besides trying to land gracefully at the end of the ride. |
- Social Club Levels of Participation for Students
- Basic Social Dancing
- The minimum level of Social Club participation is at the Basic Social
Dance sessions. Dance sessions will be posted on this web site and students will
receive email notification. Even if your primary interest is in rock climbing, all
members should participate at a very basic level in social dancing. All
students, regardless of any other activities, benefit from learning basic social
interaction that is expected in an adult environment. There will be several parties and dances for our Social Club, including an annual formal dance with a live dance orchestra.
- Dance Team
- The Dance Team is designed for the students who like to become good
ballroom dancers. This is way beyond the basic social dance level. Students
need to try out to be a member of the dance team. The Dance Team consists of an even
number of boys and girls. Members of the dance team will perform dances at various
functions and assist Mr. Schram in teaching the regular social dance sessions.
- Basic Rockclimbing and Rappelling
- Climbing is an exciting, challenging activity. You will learn how
to rock climb, which means you start at the ground and climb up. You will also learn
rappelling, which means you start at the top and jump down along a rope.
Additionally, there is ziplining where you hook up to a 250 foot wire cable and zoom on
down. Most climbing sessions are done at Mr. Schram's land where there is a 45-foot
rock climbing tower. Topnotch equipment is used and parents are encouraged to watch
how students receive training to safely participate in this very exciting and satisfying
activity. Once a year, in the spring, there will be a rockclimbing contest.
- Climb Team
- The Climb Team is meant for the serious climbers who want to become
certified safety supervisors and learn advanced climbing techniques. Basic
rockclimbers are limited to climbing at the rockclimbing tower or in a gym.
Certified members of the climb team are eligible to participate in more advanced climbing
activities. The Climb Team will start with a climbing camp at Mr. Schram's house the weekend of October 19-21. This climbing weekend is required for any person who wants to be part of the climbing team.
- Social Club Trips
- The Social Club will organize interesting trips for students and
adults in a true family/community environment. Such trips may including skiing,
climbing, biking or other activities. Our first trip was scheduled July 5-20,
2007. It was a Bicycle-Barge Holland Trip.
- Social Club Officers
- The Social Club has the following Officer positions. President,
VPClimbing, VPDance, Secretary and Treasurer. All officers must be a member
of the Dance Team or the Climb Team. VP Climbing must be a member of the Climb Team
and VP Dancing must be a member of the Dance Team. The President and Vice Presidents
must have one year Social Club experience. The Social Club Officers plan activities
with Mr. Schram.

Social
Club Levels of Participation for Adults
- Ballroom Dancing
- Twice a month on Wednesdays we will have adult ballroom dance
sessions in the dance studio of JPII HS. These sessions continue until we conclude
with a formal Winter Dance in February to a live orchestra. We will also plan
various dance outings throughout the season. Ballroom dances include the Foxtrot,
Waltz, Tango, Swing, Merengue, Cha-Cha, Rumba and Polka.  The first dance session will be Wednesday, October 17, 6:30pm-8:00pm in the JPII HS Dance Studio.

- Supervising Student Activities
- You may not be interested in personally participating in climbing,
but you may be interested in watching your children and/or spouse climb and rappell.
At a supervisory level, you may simply observe and be an adult presence.
More formally, you can participate with the Climb Team training and become a certified
rockclimbing safety supervisor. All adults who supervise student activities must
have safe-environment training, which has nothing to do with climbing and is
organized by various people, like Sister Peggy.

adults in a true family/community environment. Such trips may including skiing,
climbing, biking or other activities. Our first trip was scheduled July 5-20,
